Newspapers Seeking to Redefine Their Business Models

Newspaper owners around the country are watching very closely on how Sam Zell and his Tribune Company navigate their way through their bankruptcy.

Many publishers are probably contemplating similar paths, but they know if they with that strategy, they will have to sacrifice a great deal to become a more sustainable business.

The unstable real estate market and the potential of the Big Three automakers filing for bankruptcy also could push some newspapers over the edge. Real estate and car ads generate huge amounts of revenue for newspapers and with continued declines could put further pressure on these companies to find new sources of dollars – or significantly cut expenses.
